What the Renter’s Rights Means for Tenants with Pets

For many of us, pets aren’t just animals; they’re family. Yet for years, renters across the UK have faced the heart-breaking choice between keeping a beloved pet or securing a place to live. With only around 7% of rental properties allowing pets, too many people have been locked out of finding a home that fits their needs.

The Renter’s Rights Bill changes that. This new legislation, which came into effect on 1st May 2026, gives tenants a new legal right to request to keep a pet in their home. Considering that roughly 60% of people in the UK own a pet and nearly 20% rent, this will make a real difference for thousands of households.

But while this is a welcome step, it’s only part of the picture.

The Liberal Democrats have long argued that the rental market should offer security to those who rely on it. We pushed for an end to no-fault evictions, and we’re glad to finally see it delivered. Now we’re keeping up the pressure to ensure homes are safe, warm, and affordable.

Too many tenants are still stuck in damp, cold or unsafe homes. That’s why we’re calling for the Decent Homes Standard to be strictly enforced in the private rented sector. We’re also committed to abolishing leasehold for all properties and capping ground rents at £250.

For renters with pets, clarity matters. So, to help tenants and landlords understand their rights, Mars and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have published a helpful guide on renting with pets.
