Work Experience & Volunteering

Work experience offers an opportunity to learn more about the role of an MP, how Parliament works, and how constituency offices support local residents.

 

Placements may involve observing casework, assisting with research, attending community events, supporting communications work, and learning about local and national issues.

Eligibility

​To apply for work experience or volunteering opportunities, you must:

  • Live in the Newbury constituency.

  • Be in Year 12 or above at the time of the placement.

  • Have an interest in politics, public service, communications, policy, campaigning, or community engagement.

  • Unfortunately, due to demand, we are unable to offer placements to applicants who do not meet these criteria.

Please complete the application form below.

As part of your application, you will be asked about:

  • Your education and current year group.

  • Your connection to the constituency.

  • Why you would like work experience or to volunteer with Lee Dillon MP's office.

  • The issues that interest you most.

  • Your future career aspirations.

What Happens After I Apply?

Applications are reviewed periodically throughout the year.

 

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an informal conversation with a member of the team to discuss:

  • Their interest in politics and public service.

  • Their understanding of the role of an MP.

  • What they hope to gain from the placement.

  • Areas of particular interest.

  • All offers are conditional and may be subject to satisfactory security, safeguarding, and reference checks.

  • Due to the volume of applications received, we may not be able to offer placements to all eligible applicants.

FAQs

Can I apply if I do not live in the Newbury constituency?

No. Due to limited capacity, placements are reserved for constituents.

Who can apply?

Whether you are in sixth form, college, university, undertaking an appreticeship, or have recently graduated, we welcome applications from anyone who meets the eligibility criteria and is interested in gaining experience in politics and public service.

Will I spend time in Parliament?

Some placements may include visits to Westminster, subject to parliamentary business, security requirements, and availability. This cannot be guaranteed.

Is work experience / volunteering paid?

No. Work experience and volunteering placements are unpaid.

I am under 16. Can I apply?

At present, we only accept applications from students in Year 12 and above.

Will I need parental consent if I am under 18?

Yes. If you are under 18, parental or guardian consent will be required before a placement can be confirmed.

Will references be requested?

Yes. If you are shortlisted or offered a placement, we may request a reference from your school, college, or university before confirming the placement.

Will security checks be required?

Yes. Every work experience placement or volunteering opportunity is subject to appropriate security, safeguarding, and reference checks before it can be confirmed. This may include verification of identity, address, educational status, and references from a school, college, or university where applicable.
