Our Schools Deserve Better Than Cuts and Crises

As your MP, I regularly hear from local teachers, school leaders, and parents who are deeply concerned about the pressures facing our schools. This week, I tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM 63731) in Parliament that calls on the Government to urgently address the chronic underfunding of our school system.
I have heard about local secondary schools facing a projected budget deficit of around £870,000 this year. That kind of shortfall doesn’t just mean fewer resources - it means job insecurity for staff, impossible workloads for teachers, and a reduction in the support and opportunities available to pupils.
Sadly, this example is not an isolated case. Across West Berkshire and beyond, schools are having to make heartbreaking decisions about staffing, enrichment programmes, and vital support services - all while trying to maintain high standards for our children.
I've been contacted by many local teachers and parents who are doing their best in increasingly difficult circumstances. They’re frustrated, exhausted, and worried about what more cuts could mean for children’s futures.
Every child deserves a fully funded, high-quality education, regardless of where they live or how much money their family has. That’s why I’ve tabled this parliamentary motion. It’s a clear call to the Government: invest properly in our schools, give staff the security and resources they need, and give every child the best start in life.
I’ll continue to raise this issue and will keep pushing for the fair funding our local schools deserve.
