Visiting British Gas Academy in Thatcham

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the British Gas Academy in Thatcham. I met several of their apprentices, who showed me around and talked me through the programme.
As a strong advocate for apprenticeships, I was delighted to learn that since October last year, over 21,000 aspiring engineers have applied, including a growing number of women, veterans and athletes.
This speaks not only to the quality of the British Gas programme, but also the importance and versatility of traineeships.
For too long, apprenticeships have been viewed as a second-rate option for young people. Yet, as our skills gap widens and the cost of a degree continues to rise, they are quickly becoming a credible alternative to the traditional route.
However, despite strong interest, retention remains a challenge. In 2023-24, 38.1% of apprentices left their programmes early. The reasons vary; however, they all point to the need for modern, competitive employment packages and clear routes for progression.
Sustained investment into skilled sectors is necessary, not just to attract young people to apprenticeships, but to ensure they feel supported enough to stay.
From my conversations with their apprentices, it’s clear that British Gas is leading the way.
It was great to see so many young people talking so passionately about what they are learning, and I look forward to visiting again in the future.
