Celebrating Home-Start West Berkshire

It was a privilege to attend Home-Start West Berkshire's Impact Event last Friday to celebrate the achievements of the charity over the past year and to recognise the people who make its vital work possible.

The charity works with families facing a range of difficulties, from post-natal depression and poor mental health to disability, loneliness and economic hardship, helping parents gain confidence and create more stable and positive home environments for their children.

What stood out most was the scale of the support being delivered locally. Over the last year, Home-Start West Berkshire supported 304 families through its Baby Bank and many more through its Family Mental Health Group and Healthy Families Group. These programmes provide practical help with things such as cooking through to emotional support and opportunities for families to build confidence and resilience during an extremely vulnerable time.

One of the most moving moments of the event came during a panel discussion when a local mother shared her personal experience of receiving support from Home-Start West Berkshire. She spoke candidly about the challenges her family had faced and the difference that Home-Start volunteers had made during a difficult period in her life.

It was clear that none of this work would have been possible without this dedicated team of volunteers. A remarkable 55 people contributed more than 5,200 hours of support to local families in the past year. Those hours represent far more than a statistic. They represent friendships, encouragement, practical assistance, a listening ear and a lifeline for parents who may be struggling with isolation, mental health challenges, financial pressures or the everyday demands of family life.

The event was a powerful reminder that early intervention and community support can have a lasting impact. 

The value of this work is reflected nationally. Across the wider Home-Start UK network, almost 60,000 families and 75,000 children were supported during 2024/25, demonstrating both the growing demand for family support services and the proven effectiveness of the Home-Start model. Research highlighted by the organisation shows that families receiving support build greater resilience and improved wellbeing, leading to better outcomes for children.

As a community, we often talk about the importance of giving every child the best start in life. The work of Home-Start West Berkshire puts that principle into action every day. By supporting parents early, building confidence and reducing isolation, the charity helps strengthen families before challenges become crises. 

I would like to thank everyone involved with Home-Start West Berkshire for their dedication and commitment, particularly the volunteers whose generosity of time and spirit underpins so much of this success. Their work is making a real difference across West Berkshire, and the impact event served as a fitting celebration of all that has been achieved.
