Israel and Hamas Reach Gaza Ceasefire

I am relieved to hear that a ceasefire has been announced between Israel and Hamas. After months of unimaginable suffering and heartbreak, this is, at last, a glimmer of hope for the region. For Palestinians, it is a moment to hope that the killing will finally stop. For Israeli hostages and their families, it marks the end of a harrowing ordeal and a chance to be reunited with their loved ones.

However, the work must not stop here. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is devastating, and aid must flow urgently to those who have endured so much. The UK and the international community have a moral responsibility to ensure this ceasefire becomes more than just a pause in hostilities—it must be the foundation for lasting peace.

This issue is important to me, and I have long advocated for a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict. Back in December, I attended a debate in Parliament about the export of arms to Israel, raising concerns about how such actions can perpetuate cycles of violence. I have also stood alongside my colleagues Layla Moran MP and Callum Miller MP, who have tirelessly championed the immediate recognition of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders. Their efforts, combined with those of many others, reflect our commitment to pushing the UK Government to take meaningful, constructive action.

We must use this moment of hope to push for a two-state solution, the only pathway to dignity, security, and peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. This means a recognised Palestinian state alongside Israel, built on mutual respect and a shared future.

As I reflect on the emotional toll of this conflict—the lives lost, the families torn apart, and the communities shattered—I am reminded that our actions in Parliament must be driven by the urgency to prevent further suffering. Only a sustained political and diplomatic solution can resolve the violence and prevent the deaths of more innocent civilians. The ceasefire must be the first step toward an agreement that addresses the root causes of the conflict, protects innocent lives, and opens the door to a two-state solution.

Now is the time for leadership. The UK must work relentlessly to support peace talks, secure the release of remaining hostages, and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need. This moment of hope must not slip away—we owe it to all those who have suffered to make it a turning point for the region.
