Across Newbury and West Berkshire, I was proud to see so many people coming together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with dignity and gratitude. From coffee mornings, markets, community gatherings, church services, beacon lighting, and street parties decorated with bunting, it was clear how deeply this moment still resonates.
As I attended commemorations throughout the constituency, I was struck by how these events bring generations together. Veterans, families, children, and volunteers all played their part in honouring the legacy of those who fought for the values we hold dear.
It’s vital that we continue to share these stories and reflect on what they mean. The freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won, and they must never be taken for granted.
To everyone who took part, whether by attending an event, raising a flag, or simply taking a moment to pause, thank you. Let us remember the strength of our communities and the importance of our shared history.
