Meeting a Local Author with a Vital Message About Diabetes

Most of us know that type 2 diabetes affects blood sugar levels, but far fewer realise the impact it can have on the feet. Over time, diabetes can damage nerves and reduce blood flow, leading to foot ulcers, infection and, in severe cases, amputation.

I recently met with local author and podiatrist Jonathan Brocklehurst to discuss his new children's book, Grandpa, Where Are Your Shoes?, which aims to raise awareness of these often-overlooked complications through a heart-warming story about a grandfather living with type 2 diabetes. 

This is an issue that affects many families across West Berkshire. Yet public understanding remains low even though 1 in 2 people with diabetes will develop peripheral neuropathy, a condition that can cause loss of feeling in the feet and increase the risk of serious complications.

The consequences can be severe. A diabetes-related lower limb amputation occurs somewhere in the world every 20 seconds, and around 85% of these amputations are preceded by a foot ulcer. Diabetes-related foot ulcers also cost the NHS approximately £8,800 per wound each year.

Yet many diabetes-related foot problems can be prevented. Simple measures such as checking feet daily for cuts, blisters or changes in colour, attending regular diabetic foot screenings, wearing well-fitting footwear, managing blood sugar levels and seeking medical advice quickly if a problem develops can significantly reduce the risk of serious complications. The main challenge is raising public awareness of preventative measures.

That's where Jonathan's book comes in. By helping start important conversations about healthy habits and foot care at an early age, it raises awareness of a condition that affects thousands of people locally and millions across the UK. It also provides a useful resource for care givers and family members to understand the challenges their loved ones may face.
