MPs Unite to Demand Urgent Action for A34 Safety

Across the length of the A34, dangerous slip roads and outdated infrastructure are putting lives at risk every single day. It’s why, alongside Olivia Bailey MP, Olly Glover MP, and Kit Malthouse MP, today I’ve written to the Minister for Transport to demand urgent action.

The letter highlights the growing volume of casework and correspondence we’re each receiving from concerned constituents. This isn’t just a localised issue; it affects thousands of drivers across multiple constituencies and counties.

In Newbury and West Berkshire, the data is stark: 95% of residents who responded to my recent survey supported urgent safety improvements, with 91% saying dangerous junctions were their top concern. The slip roads at Chieveley and Speen are especially hazardous, with short merge lanes and poor visibility that routinely put drivers in unsafe situations.

Other MPs have raised serious concerns about junctions at East Ilsley, Beedon, Chilton, Highclere, and Bullington Cross. This is a systemic issue and needs a strategic, well-funded plan to address it.

We are urging the Department for Transport and National Highways to prioritise the A34 in the upcoming Road Investment Strategy (RIS3) and Road Safety Strategy. Our constituents deserve roads that are safe, modern, and fit for purpose, and we will keep pressing until they get exactly that.
