New Banking Hub Opens in Thatcham

This week marked an important milestone for Thatcham as the town’s new Banking Hub officially opened its doors to the public at its temporary location in the Broadway.

Over recent years, we have seen the closure of several high‑street banks in the town, leaving a noticeable gap in local provision. For many people, especially older residents, small businesses and those who rely on cash services, the loss of local bank branches has meant longer journeys, reduced access to advice, and a growing sense of isolation. This feeling has been reinforced recently by news of Thatcham Post Office’s impending closure

Therefore, this new Banking Hub is a significant step in restoring access to face‑to‑face banking services and meeting the needs of local people.

What is the Thatcham Banking Hub?

A Banking Hub is a shared facility that brings together services from the major high‑street banks under one roof. It offers two key types of support:

  • Counter services, available every weekday, where customers can withdraw and deposit cash, pay in cheques, and carry out everyday banking tasks.

  • Community bankers, who visit on set days each week to help customers with more complex queries relating to their own bank, such as account issues, fraud concerns, bereavement support or financial guidance.

This model balances the need for face‑to‑face banking services with the reality of lower demand.   The Thatcham branch has been launched thanks to efforts from LINK, Cash Access UK, local councillors, and community groups.

What does the Hub offer?

The Hub provides everyday banking services, alongside access to community bankers from major high‑street banks on a rotating basis:

  • Mon: No Community Banker Available

  • Tue: Lloyds Banking Group

  • Wed: NatWest

  • Thu: Barclays

  • Fri: HSBC (start date TBC)

This model ensures that residents can speak directly with their own bank about more complex matters, while still having access to shared services throughout the week.

Some constituents have asked why we still need a central Post Office now that the Banking Hub is open. The simple answer is that the existing Post Office branch offers a number of services that banks and the town’s smaller Post Office’s cannot. That is why I am working with the community to press for a solution to ensure that residents of Thatcham can access both vital banking and postal services.

This temporary site is the first step towards securing a permanent home in the town centre. I will keep pressing to ensure that Thatcham has long‑term, reliable access to the banking services it deserves.

If you are in the area, I encourage you to visit the new Hub and make use of the services now available. Your feedback will be invaluable as they continue working to strengthen local access to essential services.
