Newbury RDA: Transforming Lives Through Opportunity
One of the issues I hear about most often from parents and carers across West Berkshire is the challenge of accessing the SEND support their children need. While there is undoubtedly more work to do, it was heartening to visit the Newbury Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and see first-hand the difference that dedicated local organisations can make.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of watching pupils from Fir Tree School take part in one of their riding sessions. The enthusiasm, confidence and enjoyment on display was clear for all to see. More importantly, it was inspiring to hear about the lasting impact these sessions have on the young people who take part.
The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) provides life-changing opportunities for disabled children and adults through horse riding, carriage driving and other equestrian activities. These experiences help participants develop confidence, independence, physical skills and social connections, while providing a real sense of achievement that often extends far beyond the arena.
Speaking to riders, volunteers and staff, it was clear that Newbury RDA offers far more than a recreational activity. For many participants, it is a place where they can build confidence, overcome challenges and develop skills that support them in other areas of their lives. For families, it provides reassurance that their children have access to enriching experiences in a supportive and inclusive environment.
I left feeling encouraged that young people in West Berkshire have access to such a valuable resource. At a time when many families continue to raise concerns about SEND provision, organisations like Newbury RDA demonstrate the positive impact that community-based support can have on children's wellbeing, development and future opportunities.
Like many charities, Newbury RDA relies heavily on fundraising and community support to continue its work. The team hosts a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, and I would encourage anyone interested in supporting their work to find out more about what they do and how they can get involved.
My thanks go to the staff, volunteers and supporters who make Newbury RDA possible. Their dedication is helping to change lives and create opportunities for some of the young people who need them most.
