This week, the Conservative Party’s leader, Kemi Badenoch, floated the idea of means-testing the triple lock on state pensions. For pensioners in Newbury and across the country, this could mean losing out on the annual guaranteed increase that helps them keep up with the cost of living.
This news is deeply concerning. Many older residents in our community rely on the triple lock to make ends meet—especially as prices for essentials like food and energy remain stubbornly high.
The triple lock was introduced by the Liberal Democrats to ensure pensions rise by at least 2.5%, or in line with inflation or wage growth, whichever is higher. It was designed to protect pensioners from falling behind, and I’m proud to say it was our policy.
The Labour government has already cut vital support like the Winter Fuel Payment, and now the Conservatives are eyeing the triple lock. This uncertainty sends shivers down the spine of pensioners who have worked hard all their lives and deserve dignity in retirement.
As your MP, I’ll keep fighting to ensure older people in Newbury aren’t left behind. If you’re worried about this issue or want to share your thoughts, please get in touch with me at lee.dillon.mp@parliament.uk.
