Protecting West Berkshire from Repeat Sewage Failures

Following several days of sustained and heavy rainfall in West Berkshire, I wrote to Thames Water for an update on the current condition and performance of wastewater and storm-overflow infrastructure serving communities in the Newbury constituency.
Many of you will remember the events of 2024, which saw raw sewage spill into the streets, homes and gardens of residents in Newbury, Cookham, Hampstead Norreys, and Lambourn. Over several months, these spills caused immeasurable distress, extreme health risks and significant financial loss for our communities.
It is vital that this does not happen again. That is why I have asked Thames Water to set out what steps they are taking to prevent a repeat of 2024, what contingency plans are in place for further wet weather, and how they will keep residents properly informed if problems arise.
No one should have to live in fear of sewage entering their homes every time there is prolonged rainfall.
