Pushing for Early Years Support in West Berkshire

Earlier this month, I wrote to the Minister for Early Education to raise concerns about nursery provision here in West Berkshire. With more families struggling to access affordable childcare, and school-based nurseries facing real funding pressures, it’s important we keep pushing for better support - not just for parents, but for the early years professionals working so hard to give children the best possible start.
I’ve now received a reply from the Minister, which sets out the Government’s plans to expand school-based nursery places through a national programme starting this September. While I welcome the general direction of travel, the reality is that our area has missed out in the first phase - with the school in Hermitage, for example, being unsuccessful in its bid. That’s disappointing given the clear local need, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on how future phases are delivered to ensure West Berkshire isn’t left behind.
I was also glad to see the Minister acknowledge the important role of private and voluntary nurseries and confirm that free school meals will be extended to all children from families on Universal Credit from 2026 - something I’ve long supported. It’s vital that early years settings of all types are properly included in national support schemes.
This is a fast-moving policy area, and I know how much parents and providers across Newbury and West Berkshire are relying on proper, long-term investment in early years. I’ll continue to raise this with ministers and work with local schools, nurseries and childcare providers to make sure our voices are heard. We must make sure every child in our community has access to the high-quality early education they deserve.
