Putting Farm Safety First in Our Rural Communities

Farm Safety Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the risks faced by those who work in agriculture and to promote a culture of safety across the farming sector.

Farming is one of the UK's most vital industries, producing our food, supporting rural jobs and helping to maintain the landscapes that define so much of our countryside. However, it also remains one of the most dangerous professions in the country. In 2024/25, 23 farm workers lost their lives in Great Britain, with moving and overturning vehicles the leading cause of fatal accidents.

Behind these statistics are families, friends and communities whose lives have been changed forever. Every farm accident is a reminder of the importance of taking practical steps to reduce risk, whether that is maintaining equipment, following safe working practices, wearing appropriate safety gear or ensuring that everyone on the farm understands the hazards around them.

As the MP for a rural constituency, I know the immense contribution that farmers and agricultural workers make to our local communities. The long hours, dedication and resilience shown by those working in the sector deserve recognition and support. We all rely on the hard work of our farmers, and it is only right that we do everything we can to help ensure they return home safely at the end of each day.

The Liberal Democrats have consistently called for stronger support for rural communities and farming businesses, recognising that a sustainable farming sector depends on both economic resilience and workforce wellbeing. Efforts to improve access to rural healthcare, mental health support and practical assistance for farming families all play a role in creating safer and healthier communities.

Farm Safety Week is a reminder that safety must never be an afterthought. By looking out for one another and continuing to promote good practice across the industry, we can help reduce accidents and save lives.
