Standing with Ukraine Three Years On from the Russian Invasion

Updated: Mar 14

Today marks the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine—a day that reminds us of both the incredible resilience and the deep sacrifices of the Ukrainian people. As we look back on this pivotal moment in history, it's clear that the international community must act decisively to ensure Ukraine's victory. The UK, alongside our European allies, should be ready to take bold actions—like repurposing frozen Russian assets and strengthening our military support in the region. In the face of foreign efforts to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty, it's more important than ever that we stand by our Ukrainian friends, whether at home or abroad.

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting a roundtable discussion with eleven Ukrainians who are currently living in Newbury. Listening to them share their personal experiences and the everyday challenges they face in our community was both eye-opening and deeply moving. We discussed how the UK's healthcare system—with its unique structure and processes—differs significantly from what many of them were accustomed to in Ukraine, a change that has brought its own set of challenges as they work to adapt. Additionally, we spoke about heightened anxieties triggered by Trump's recent remarks, showing that such divisive comments only deepen their sense of uncertainty and vulnerability. They also shared with me stories about the hurdles of navigating the visa system and difficulties regarding employment opportunities. I remain actively involved in providing support and am committed to standing by our Ukrainian friends as they navigate these challenges.

The third anniversary is also a time to celebrate the Newbury community's remarkable response to the conflict. Local host families have come together in support of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, opening their homes to those in need. Their unwavering solidarity and compassion not only ease the challenges faced by our Ukrainian neighbours, but also serve as a powerful testament to the spirit of unity and resilience in Newbury.

These stories remind us that a comprehensive approach to support—whether through bolstering our national defences or strengthening community resources—is essential in upholding the values of freedom, justice, and unity that define us as a nation. We stand with Ukraine.
