The UK Must Uphold International Law

As the two-week US-Iran ceasefire comes to an end, the brinkmanship must also end. However, yet again, Trump has threatened to strike civilian infrastructure in Iran

In Parliament this morning, I challenged the Foreign Secretary directly: if the United States follows through on these threats, will the Government withdraw US access to UK military bases?

Even if this is another reckless smokescreen to bring the Iranians back to the negotiating table, this mafia-esque language risks breaching international law, and at such a precarious moment, risks slamming the door to diplomacy shut.

From the outset of the conflict, I and my Liberal Democrat colleagues have been clear: any UK involvement must be grounded in international law. Failing to stand up for this course of action, whether they are our ally or adversary, would not only severely damage our international reputation but drag us further into a war that continues to hurt constituents in Newbury and across the country.

Mortgage bills are up, fuel prices are up, fertiliser is up, and Deloitte’s latest surveys reveal that consumer confidence reached its lowest level since 2023, dropping three points in the first quarter of 2026 to -14.1%.

Many are deeply worried about the months to come, and following the Prime Minister's talks in Paris on Friday, we must continue to work with our reliable allies to press for peace and deliver the targeted financial support that households urgently need at home.
