WASPI: A First Step in the Right Direction

For years, the Liberal Democrats have pushed the Government to properly compensate the women affected by state pension age changes, the WASPI women. So, the decision to reconsider its earlier rejection of compensation is at least a step in the right direction.
Millions of women were left in financial hardship through no fault of their own, after the Government failed to properly notify them about the changes. These women have faced years of uncertainty and frustration, and it’s only right that they now receive the fairness they’ve been fighting for.
I’ve long admired the courage and determination of the WASPI campaigners, who have refused to give up despite countless setbacks. One of my first actions as an MP was to sign a motion calling for fair compensation for those affected, because it’s the right thing to do.
Back in December 2024, the Government apologised for the delay in informing those affected, but still refused to offer any financial compensation, a decision that felt like another blow to women who had already been treated unfairly. The Ombudsman was clear that compensation should be awarded, and Liberal Democrats have stood by that recommendation from day one.
It’s simply wrong to expect those who’ve already been wronged to pay the price for government mistakes, especially at a time when so many are struggling with the cost of living. The Government’s latest move to review its stance is welcome, but now we need to see action, not just words.
