One of the most rewarding parts of my role as your MP is seeing first-hand the hard work, dedication, and creativity that goes into running local businesses and supporting our rural economy. Over the past few weeks, I’ve met with a range of business owners, producers, and community leaders to hear about their successes and challenges, and to discuss how we can continue to back enterprise in every corner of Newbury and West Berkshire.
At the recent Newbury BID Talk of the Town meeting, it was great to hear about the exciting work underway to keep Newbury town centre vibrant. From plans for Christmas events and festive lighting to discussions on pedestrianisation, crime prevention, and updates on Victoria Park, including Park Run and youth football, it’s clear that Newbury is brimming with community energy. My thanks go to the BID team for their commitment and for bringing together local traders to share ideas and shape the future of our high street.
My visit to the Tally Ho pub in Hungerford highlighted the power of community spirit. The determination of local residents to keep this much-loved hub open shows what can be achieved when people work together.
I also had the pleasure of visiting All Angels Vineyard, where I saw the care and skill that goes into producing award-winning local wine. It’s a reminder that our rural economy, from farms to vineyards, plays a vital role in supporting jobs, tourism, and West Berkshire’s identity.
Our local businesses and industries are the backbone of our economy. They need and deserve the right conditions to grow, from fair taxation and better infrastructure to a supportive planning system and a strong local workforce. I’ll continue working with business owners, West Berkshire Council, and local organisations to ensure Newbury and West Berkshire remain great places to work, trade, and invest.
