Celebrating National Fish and Chip Day with Our Local Favourites

Today is National Fish and Chip Day, and what better excuse to celebrate one of the best-loved parts of our food tradition. Across Newbury and West Berkshire, fish and chip shops are at the heart of our high streets and our Friday nights. They are also a great example of the hard work and creativity that runs through our local hospitality industry.

To mark the day, I ran a local survey asking residents to vote for their favourite fish and chip shop. The response was fantastic, with lots of nominations coming in from across the area. It was great to see so many people taking the time to shout out their local favourites and support the businesses that help make our towns and villages thrive.

Beyond being a bit of fun, this was a chance to recognise the role our local hospitality sector plays in the life of our communities. From preparing great food to providing a reliable local service, our independent businesses contribute so much to our area and help support local jobs.

After counting the votes, I was very pleased to present this year’s winner with a certificate earlier today. Congratulations to The Avon Fish Bar in Newbury, who came out on top thanks to great food and excellent service. It was a real pleasure to visit them this morning and meet the team.

A big thank you to everyone who voted, and to all the brilliant fish and chip shops across our area who keep this proud tradition going strong. I will continue to do all I can to support local businesses like these in Parliament and in the community.
