May Highlights

May has been another busy month, with a particular focus on equestrian safety, A34 campaign activity, and ongoing work on local health issues here in the constituency and in Westminster.

Local voices, local action

We kicked off the month celebrating local election success, thank you to everyone who stood, supported, or voted. Our democracy is only as strong as the people who take part, and I’m proud to see that spirit alive and well in West Berkshire.

Throughout May, I had the privilege of meeting some more of our local groups and services. I visited Citizens Advice West Berkshire and the Willows School, both doing incredible work to support families in our community. I also met with the newly refurbished Nationwide branch in Newbury to hear how they’re supporting vulnerable customers.

VE Day commemorations across the constituency reminded us all of the importance of service and sacrifice, and it was an honour to attend services and meet many of you at these moving events.

I also joined a site visit to the A34, following up on growing concerns about slip road safety. This is part of a coordinated, cross-party campaign with neighbouring MPs – including our joint 10 Minute Rule Bill, letters to ministers, and meetings with National Highways. We all want the same thing: safer roads for all.

In Lambourn, I joined the Road Safety Awareness Ride in memory of the young racehorse Knockalla, visited Oaksey House to see the brilliant work of the Injured Jockeys Fund, and met with Jamie Osborne at his yard. I’ve since tabled a motion in Parliament to raise awareness about equestrian road safety – a critical issue in our rural communities.

In Westminster

In Parliament, Thames Water continued to be high on the agenda - from environmental concerns to financial mismanagement. I joined cross-party calls for special administration and a stronger regulator to protect residents, rivers, and public trust.

On the Football Governance Bill, I’ve been actively involved in meetings with STAR Reading, the Premier League, Fair Game, and committee sessions. Football is more than a sport – it’s community, identity, and pride, and I’m determined to help shape a system that works for fans and clubs alike.

I also joined events and debates on health, social care, and pharmacy access, including drop-ins on independent pharmacies, lobular breast cancer, and the Disability Employment Charter. These meetings are vital for shaping fairer policy that reflects your needs.

You’ve also been in touch with me in huge numbers this month – we received over 1,100 emails, with around 30% focused on health and medicine. One of the most emotive subjects raised was assisted dying. I want to thank everyone who has been in touch with information and personal stories. This is next due to be debated on 13th June.
