Fighting for the Future of the Royal Berkshire Hospital

When I heard the news that the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s rebuild had been delayed yet again, I felt deeply frustrated—and I know many of you in Newbury will share my anger.

This isn’t just another hospital for me; it’s personal. I was born in the Royal Berkshire Hospital nearly 42 years ago, and at the current rate, I’ll likely be turning 60 by the time its replacement is ready. That’s how long we’ve been made to wait for a vital facility that should already be serving our community.

The Royal Berkshire is the cornerstone of healthcare for Newbury and the surrounding areas. Yet, it’s failing. It’s not the fault of the brilliant NHS staff who work tirelessly every day, but the reality is that this hospital is no longer fit for purpose. Years of underinvestment and delay mean patients are being treated in a building that wasn’t designed to handle the demands of modern healthcare.

When Boris Johnson promised “40 new hospitals” in 2019, we were told the Royal Berkshire would be among them. We were given hope, and now it’s been snatched away. The recent announcement places the rebuild in Wave 3 of the government’s plans, meaning construction won’t even start until 2035—at the earliest.

This is more than a broken promise; it’s a betrayal of Newbury and our community. Lives are at stake. Patients and NHS staff cannot wait another decade for the facilities they deserve.

I’m demanding answers. The government must release an impact assessment detailing exactly what these delays mean for patient safety in Newbury. How much longer can we afford to wait while the Royal Berkshire struggles to keep up with the demands of our growing community?

Our town deserves better. Our NHS deserves better. And I won’t stop fighting until we get the hospital we were promised.
