Fighting to Fix NHS Dentistry in Newbury and Beyond

If you’ve struggled to get an NHS dental appointment recently, you’re not alone.
I’ve been contacted by many people across Newbury and West Berkshire to say they’ve been left waiting in pain, paying out of pocket, or even resorting to DIY remedies because they can’t get the treatment they need. It’s deeply concerning, and sadly, it’s becoming more common across the country.
That’s why I’ve called on the Government to take urgent action to address the shortage of NHS dentists and ensure fair access to treatment for everyone, not just those who can afford to go private.
The facts are stark:
8,500 dentists have left the NHS in the last four years
4,000 more are approaching retirement
329 NHS contracts were handed back last year as practices struggled to stay afloat
Over 16,000 people were admitted to A&E last year due to tooth decay
It’s the leading cause of hospitalisation for children aged 5 to 9
In Newbury and West Berkshire, local dental surgeries are under real pressure, and residents are paying the price. With the cost of living already high, dental care should not be another worry on people’s plates.
I am joining my fellow Liberal Democrat MPs to also call out the Government for failing to assess the impact of rising employer National Insurance on dental practices, a move that risks pushing even more dentists out of the NHS.
I’ll keep fighting to make sure residents here in Newbury get the dental care they need. No one should be left in pain or forced to go private just to see a dentist.
If you’ve been affected, please keep sharing your experiences. Your stories help me speak up for you in Parliament and make sure your voice is heard.
