Newbury Station Car Park Stairwell Update
- May 19
- 1 min read
I was recently contacted by constituents concerned about rough sleepers setting up in the Newbury station car park, particularly in an area with poor lighting.
I completely understand the worry this can cause. When you use the station regularly and see the situation remain unchanged, it can feel as though nothing is being done and no one is aware.
That is why I raised the matter directly with the council, and I am pleased to confirm that action is being taken.
As of 14th May, the lighting in the hallway has been repaired. Temporary warning cones and notices have also been installed, advising passengers to use the lifts or stairwells on the north side of the car park while the issue is resolved.
The council has also assured me that their housing team is actively working to support the individual sleeping in the stairwell, with the aim of moving them to a safer and more appropriate location, for their wellbeing and for the safety of rail passengers.
Once they have been relocated, the area will undergo a deep clean to ensure it is safe and welcoming for passengers again.
Thank you to those who reported the issue to the council and for getting in touch with me.
If you are worried about someone who is homeless, you can take the following steps to report it:
Contact StreetLink - to alert local outreach teams
Report concerns to West Berkshire Council - for safeguarding and support
Call 999 — if someone appears to be in immediate danger or unwell
