Thames Water Must Clean Up Their Act in Newbury and Elsewhere

Updated: Oct 18, 2024

Since becoming the MP for Newbury, I've been engaged in addressing one of the most critical issues facing our community as promised: the management of our water resources and the accountability of water companies like Thames Water.

Taking Action Against Sewage Spills

The news of the £104 million fine imposed on Thames Water by Ofwat has been a significant development. This fine, though long overdue, is a welcome step towards holding these companies accountable for the damage they’ve caused to our rivers and environment. I am in communication with Ofwat, DEFRA, the Environment Agency, and Thames Water to ensure that this fine is not just a one-off event, but the beginning of a sustained effort to reform the industry.

Consultation on Water Industry Reforms

The government’s consultation proposing that customer compensation for poor service could be doubled is another important step. While I support any move to strengthen consumer rights, I believe it’s essential that these changes are part of a broader, more comprehensive reform of the water industry. I will continue to call for stronger measures, including the abolishment of Ofwat in its current form, to be replaced with a regulator that has real teeth to clamp down on these polluting firms.

Standing Up for Our Community

In addition to advocating for tougher penalties and better regulation, I’m committed to ensuring that the voices of Newbury residents are heard loud and clear. The fact that Thames Water paid out £154 million to shareholders last year while expecting to be fined is unacceptable. This profit-before-people approach cannot continue. I will continue to press for an end to such payouts until water companies demonstrate a genuine commitment to investing in our infrastructure and protecting our environment.

Next Steps

As we move forward, I will remain focused on holding these companies to account. I’ve signed several Early Day Motions (EDMs) calling for urgent action on water quality and environmental protection, and will continue doing what I can to hold Thames Water to account.

Our environment is too precious to be sacrificed for corporate greed. I will continue to fight for cleaner rivers, stricter regulations, and a water industry that truly serves the people.
