The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards

I had the pleasure of meeting winners from the 2025 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards during their recent visit to Parliament. These awards celebrate the incredible people whose skill and dedication keep British racing running — from stable staff to trainers, riders and grooms.
Although Simone Meloni, who works for Nicky Henderson in Lambourn, was unable to attend the event in person, I was delighted to offer my congratulations on his achievement. Simone was named Employee of the Year, a national honour that recognises his outstanding professionalism and contribution to the sport.
It was a privilege to meet other award winners and hear more about their work across the racing industry. Their passion and commitment are what make this sport such a vital part of life in towns like Newbury and across West Berkshire.
This visit also came just weeks after the Axe the Racing Tax campaign brought the industry together in Westminster to oppose the Government’s proposed rise in betting tax. The British Horseracing Authority has warned that the change could cost the sport £330 million over five years and threaten thousands of jobs.
Newbury Racecourse is a cornerstone of our local economy and identity. Supporting the people who make British racing possible, from yard staff to jockeys, remains essential. I’ll continue to back the Axe the Racing Tax campaign and make sure the industry’s voice is heard in Parliament.
Congratulations once again to Simone Meloni and all the winners.
