Why I’ve Signed the Petition to #AxeTheRacingTax

For so many of us in Newbury and across West Berkshire, horseracing is more than just a sport - it’s part of our local identity.

Whether it’s the buzz around Newbury Racecourse on a big day or the jobs and businesses supported behind the scenes, racing is deeply woven into our local economy, our communities and our cultural heritage. It supports stable staff, trainers, farriers, vets, hospitality venues, and countless small businesses in and around the town - as well as bringing thousands of visitors to the area every year.

That’s why I’m supporting the campaign to #AxeTheRacingTax - and why I’m encouraging everyone who cares about the future of racing to add their name too.

Right now, the Government is proposing to tax betting on horseracing at the same rate as online casinos. That might sound like a small change, but it would cost British racing at least £66 million a year - a hit the sport simply cannot afford. On top of recent policy changes that have already undermined racing’s finances, this could be the final straw for many jobs, stables and rural economies.

Here in Newbury, we know just how much racing contributes to our local economy, our community pride, and our countryside. We also know what’s at stake if this goes ahead.

I’ve signed the petition because I believe British racing is worth standing up for. And if you agree, I’d urge you to do the same.

If you would like, you can add your name here: www.axetheracingtax.org

Together we can send a clear message to the Government, don’t let this cherished part of British life be driven into decline.
