Backing the Next Generation of Farmers

Across the country, food security has become one of the most pressing challenges we face. That’s why I am proud to support the Liberal Democrat’s major new training scheme ‘Farm First,’ an ambitious plan to strengthen our food security and promote the next generation of farmers.
Recent Government statistics reveal only 1 in 20 farmers (5%) is under the age of 35. This should be a klaxon call for urgent change as we risk losing a whole generation of farmers and the crucial skills they possess. For too long, young people considering a career in agriculture have found an industry that is now being pushed to the brink, lacking support.
A Farm First scheme would change this, providing training, confidence, and skills for young people to build a career in this vital industry.
Strengthening farming must be placed in lockstep with addressing our food security crisis. Today, 1 in 5 children (18%) and 1 in 10 households (11%) are living in food poverty. Improving education around home-grown food production, promoting local supply chains, and investing in agricultural skills are vital ingredients if we are to build a robust and secure food system.
It’s time to back our farmers and the young people who will power the future of British agriculture.
