February Highlights

Updated: Mar 5

February has been another busy month, with more opportunities to meet local businesses, organisations, and residents, as well as to push for change on key issues. With Parliament in recess, I was able to spend more time in the constituency, hearing directly from the people I represent.

Housing, Education, and Rural Economy

I started the month at a Shelter breakfast, discussing the ongoing challenges in housing and how we can push for better protections for renters. I also attended the Harry’s Hat reception in Parliament, learning about the incredible work being done to support families affected by hydrocephalus.

As part of my NFU Fellowship, I joined a Dairy Day event to gain further insight into the challenges facing our farmers. Meanwhile, at a Teach First event, I heard about the importance of investing in education and teacher recruitment to ensure all children receive the best start in life.

Housing and infrastructure remain major concerns across West Berkshire, and I joined discussions at the Homes for the South West Reception to push for solutions. I also met with Ofcom, reinforcing the need for strong digital connectivity across the region.

Investing in Skills and Supporting Local Business

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, I visited the British Gas Academy in Thatcham, where apprentices are training in energy efficiency and green technologies. Seeing their enthusiasm and the skills they’re developing was inspiring—it reinforced why expanding apprenticeship opportunities is so important.

Locally, I spent time at Parkway Shopping Centre, where I saw the progress on the new Primark premises, a welcome boost for our high street. I also visited businesses like Fink Street Food, Freixenet, and Halo Pharmacy in Thatcham, hearing firsthand about the challenges facing local retailers and pharmacies.

Strengthening Community Connections

One of the most rewarding visits this month was to Winchcombe Place Care Home, where I learned about their Generations of Change programme, which brings together care home residents and young people for intergenerational learning. It was fantastic to see how these projects foster connections across generations. I also spent time at Downview Residential Home, seeing the importance of strong community care.

In Lambourn, I met with trainer Tom Ward to discuss the racing industry, which plays such a key role in our local economy. I also caught up with the Bedwyn Passenger Group, discussing rail services and transport links.

Standing with Ukraine

Ahead of my visit to Ukraine to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion, I hosted a roundtable with Ukrainian families living in Newbury. Hearing their stories was a stark reminder of why our support remains so crucial. The UK must continue to stand with Ukraine—both on the ground and by ensuring those who have settled here in West Berkshire receive the support they need.

A34 Safety Campaign – Have Your Say

Improving safety on the A34 remains a top priority, and I have launched an A34 survey as part of my ongoing work with neighbouring MPs. I’ll be meeting with the Minister again this week and with my fellow MPs later in the month, and every piece of feedback helps to strengthen our case for urgent safety improvements. If you use the A34, please share your experiences here.

Get in Touch
