Ed Davey’s message this week is one I wholeheartedly support. The suffering in Gaza is unconscionable, and the international community must act with urgency to end it.
The Liberal Democrats have been consistent and vocal in calling for an immediate ceasefire, the opening of humanitarian corridors, and the delivery of vital aid to those trapped in unimaginable conditions. But this cannot be where the conversation ends.
As Ed rightly says, if we are ever to achieve lasting peace, we must be honest about what that looks like. A two-state solution - with both Israel and Palestine recognised, secure, and able to thrive - remains the only viable path forward. That’s why the recognition of a Palestinian state by the international community is so vital.
Here in the UK, we have a role to play. Our Government should be leading, not lagging behind. I fully support Ed’s call for the Prime Minister to make it clear that the UK will lead the way in recognising Palestine as a state. We should not be afraid to speak up for peace, justice, and dignity for all people in the region.
This conflict has claimed far too many lives and caused generational trauma for both Palestinians and Israelis. If we are to break this cycle, we need brave leadership - not just in words, but in action.
The Liberal Democrats will keep pushing for that leadership. For a ceasefire. For aid. For a political process that recognises both peoples’ rights and aspirations.
And for a UK that shows moral courage on the world stage.
Update – 29 July 2025:
The Prime Minister’s announcement marks vital progress towards the UK recognising Palestine as a state, a crucial step towards a two-state solution that would bring dignity and security for both Palestinians and Israelis. I welcome this shift in position, but this recognition should have come months ago, and must not be used as a bargaining chip. The humanitarian disaster in Gaza is worsening daily. The UK must go further: end arms sales to Israel, implement sanctions on its cabinet, and press for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages by Hamas. I’ll continue to push for meaningful, urgent action.
